Offering Food to the hungry is the most priceless act ever

Image
28-Jan-2018: Around a fortnight ago, as I was taking a walk on the streets along with Hema [my wife], we met a girl selling story books and little toys. Neither will be of use to us, so we ignored. While we tried to move, all we heard from her was, "I'm hungry..I'm hungry.. please buy this, I'm hungry". Everyone of us is hungry at some point in time during the day, but being hungry without knowing where the next meal will come from, is a very tough situation to be in. From whatever I have seen in my life so far, I strongly feel that the pain nobody should go through, is the one induced by hunger. We asked her, "We really do not need the books, will it be OK if we buy you food?". She happily agreed. Coimbatore is known for the numerous bakeries and tea stalls you can find. She took us to one of those nearby and listed down what she needed. A veg puff, a pack each of chips and biscuits, accounting to 37 rupees. She gleefully thanked us. ...

Wake up, India - It's now or never

A few weeks ago, I read an article about some of the most dangerous places in this world. It was terrifying and sent shivers down my spine. I found that all the cities and countries mentioned had one thing in common. They are unsafe to the general public as a whole without any discrimination based on the gender. If women safety, or the lack of it alone is considered to be a criteria, I presumed India will occupy a top 5 spot. I was right but wasn't too proud that I was. I maybe less informed about many other cruel incidents world over, but what has happened to women in recent times in this country, Bangalore in particular, are terribly disgusting. For all the accolades we offer ourselves as being proud Indians, I personally don’t think we deserve anything of that. The laws we have framed are uselessly compassionate towards the offender, while showing little of that towards the victim. If a six year old kid cannot be protected from being assaulted, there is something...

Make a telling difference through Education

Image
Almost exactly at the middle of Karnataka lies a beautiful place called Ranebennur . The main source of income for the residents is agriculture, promptly supported by the free flowing Tungabhadra . A deviation from the highway takes us to an equally exotic venue named as Kadaramandalagi. BELAKU - a social service association in Bangalore, is actively involved in offering support to the Spandana school that exists in this location. Among a few other initiatives that they are part of, supporting kinds belonging to this school takes huge prominence. (More on it here - https://www.facebook.com/BelakuGroup ) We have been regular visitors to this school for over three years now, many times for their Annual day functions in the month of February. I look forward to these trips with fond eagerness. I don’t take too long to get along with children because 1) they are lively, energetic and can truthfully smile 2) they don’t really care how stupid you are, as long as you entertain them...

The inspirational speech of Steve Jobs

Image
Forgive my ignorance, forgive my poor knowledge - I wasn't even aware of who Steve Jobs is, until over a year ago. I had used the I-Pod at least 5 years ago, but I still was using it without actually knowing who would have been the key element behind the design and functioning of the device. My reading habit has been poor at best and my drive to know what’s happening in the world around has been pretty limited and I hope that explains. Back in 1995, when I was first exposed to computers, the first thing that my tutor had to talk about was the Operating System. As always is the case, it starts with DOS and we continue to learn on what is so special about an Operating System, why it is required, what are the operations it performs and a few other related aspects. We gradually move onto learning Windows which is far more decorated to look at and fascinating to work with. An interesting questions here - How many of us do realize that Macintosh and not Windows introduced the usage of...
