And the magician wields his latest magic...
It would have been a shame had Roger Federer, the supremely gifted and the most complete Tennis player ever (I have no doubts, do you?) had not won the French Open in his career. Not to be - A few moments ago today, the artist scripted his most beautiful and cherished painting (Ask Roger for a confirmation) by winning his most coveted trophy at the Roland Garros, in his fourth final.
Earlier this year, RF left the colorful Rod Laver Arena with tears rolling all over, having lost the Australian Open final to Rafa, today he again was leaving the French Clay with a huge burst of tears..But this time its only a sense of relief rather than grief that was on display in Australia. Though he had absolutely nothing to prove the world on what his tennis is all about, the one missing laurel in his list of achievements have always raised questions - Is he good enough to win on Clay? "Why not" was the response from Roger, as he relentlessly reached the final year after year, but for some strange reason (One being Rafa's resilience) was unable to get through the massive Spaniard and repeatedly succumbed.
With all due respect to Roger, right from the moment Rafa lost on the first Sunday, there was only one winner - The King, the artist, the magician, the champion, the best and most loved of all, you can attach any adjective you can possibly find in the Oxford - Roger Federer. Exactly a week afterwards, I, being a Rafael Nadal fan, have got absolutely no qualms that the master craftsman won it. If not Federer, who else?!! Hail Roger, Hail your ability, Hail your self belief, Hail your endurance, Hail your fitness level, Hail your courage and last but not the least Hail your character!!...
I have lots to write about this incredible player's latest accomplishment, let me quickly pen down the key aspects that I think that mattered most, for him to win the French Open 2009.
- Exceptionally skillful drop shot - from both forehand and backhand, both from the baseline and close to the net, both which on attack and defense. I am not exaggerating, but I didn't see even one of those hitting the net or getting whacked by the opponent. It just drops in the service box, turns 90 degrees and merrily gets into the doubles court and never allowed even the fastest pair of legs to reach. If he can do this on Clay, think about the grass at Wimbledon - Fabulous skill, true Mastery of the slice.
- Booming first serves - Anytime he was in trouble facing a break point, he pulled out one of those ripping first serves and drove himself into safety.
- The backhand cross-court - Federer delivers a curving serve from the Deuce Court, anyone who stretches and knocks it to the deep end of his backhand will be in for a surprise. Because, Roger reaches for it in a jiffy, in one soothing parabolic motion, sends the ball soaring to the other end of the court (diagonally of course) leaving the opponent bewildered and yes, chasing the ball.
- Undying willingness for Number 14 - The Swiss should have equalled Pete Sampras' open era record of 14 slams back in February in Australia, which in gruelling circumstances was denied by Rafael Nadal. With Nadal knocked out early, it would have taken a monster to deny Roger the title and the monster never arrived.
- The ruthlessness - that has always been Federer's forte. Robin Soderling, someone who had brought down the great Rafeal Nadal to submission, being destroyed in such devastating fashion in the final, goes on to say how ruthless Roger Federer could be, when he is feeling on top of his game.
And many more fantastic attributes that belong to Fed-Ex alone...
Now then, the jinx called the French Open firmly annexed, Federer can only improve from here and become more unforgiving - Opponents beware!
Very well written. Read around 100 articles in the last couple of weeks and more than 20 today. Could not describe the 'Magician' better. Hats off.
