Crazy Mohan - Humor, Wisdom, Character and much more!

This afternoon the news about the legendary playwright, Crazy Mohan passing away came through. Without really knowing him in person, it was shattering. I belong to an age where TV serials [not the everlasting ones we see today] that happen once a week were something we looked forward to with lot of eagerness. Here’s Crazy comes to my mind straightaway. We are referring to pre-youtube and only-Doordarshan days - therefore, we didn't get entertainment on demand. We had to wait and the waits were worthwhile every single time. A tired day’s work for Fathers, a poor day at school for children, Mothers in need of a break between all house chores - Crazy Mohan and his troupe's serials entertained all of them. That explains the nature of his humor - clean and open for all. His brother, Maadhu Balaji who took up various prominent roles in his plays, requires a mention here.

In addition to serials and plays, Crazy Mohan is a well known script writer for Tamil movies. Being close friends with Kamal Hasan has helped them work together for a lot of outrageously epic movies - Michael Madana Kamarajan, Pammal K Sammandham, Tenali, Vasool Raja MBBS, Avvai Shanmugi and the list goes on. As many would readily agree, these movies filled with comedy sequences, never fade in time. They carry a freshness and provide an impression that you are viewing them for the first time, always.

Crazy Mohan has also taken up a Naduvar’s role in Tamil Pattimandrams [Debate Judge]. From time to time he offers a lot of real incident examples using a tone that is exceptionally fluid. They always carry an air of innocence, without compromising on the solidity of the message delivered. He also gets shown a lot of respect from participants and viewers alike, the loud applause he receives is a fitting indication.

Being a proper old-timer, I have enjoyed watching and listening to every bit of Crazy Mohan’s dialogues on the screen - delivered either directly by him or through others. His fans all over the world will mourn for a while. Because we are not just talking about a person here, it’s an art which has created a lasting legacy. 67 is not too young, neither is dying age - considering his father’s expiry last year at the age of 93. Having made a living out of making people laugh, having lived a simple, generous and clean life, leaving at that age is a message!

RIP, Crazy Mohan. Gone too early, but created a lot of impact and memories that will live long!
